What is Biodiesel?

 Biodiesel is a renewable fuel that is made primarily from vegetable oils and animal fats. It can be used in cars, trucks, buses, tractors, generators, and industrial machinery. This type of fuel is also called Renewable Diesel. It has been in use since at least the late 1800s and was initially created to power farm machinery. Biodiesel is mainly made through transesterification which extracts alcohol from vegetable oils like soybean oil, rapeseed oil, and palm oil to create biodiesel fuel with high specific gravity.

What is Biodiesel

John David Kaweske shares that biodiesel is primarily made through transesterification which extracts alcohol from vegetable oils like soybean oil, rapeseed oil, and palm oil to create biodiesel fuel with high specific gravity.

John David Kaweske indicates that biodiesel is an alternative to petroleum diesel fuel that can be used in cars, trucks, buses, tractors, and other engines. It's made by extracting alcohol from vegetable oils or animal fats using the process of transesterification.

 

How Biodiesel is Made

Biodiesel is made from vegetable oils or animal fats through a process of transesterification. In order to create biodiesel fuel, the oils are mixed with methanol (wood alcohol) and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst at high pressure and temperature. This process transforms the fatty acids into glycerin, which can then be used as a fuel itself or can be further processed into biodiesel fuel with high specific gravity.

John David Kaweske shares that the main byproducts of this process are glycerin and water. Glycerin is then separated from the reaction mixture leaving behind the alcohol, which goes through another distillation process to purify it and increase its concentration to 90-95%. The purified alcohol is finally mixed with hydrogen gas under pressure in an autoclave at 350 degrees Fahrenheit to produce hydrocarbons which are condensates from petroleum-based fuels used as raw materials for biodiesel production.

Types of biodiesel



Biodiesel is a fuel of natural origin. It can be manufactured from various renewable sources. Depending on the source it classified into different types.

John David Kaweske shares that there are three main classes of biodiesel:

· Biodiesel from crops. Such as soy, corn or rape, whose oils are used for biofuel.

· Biodiesel from trees. Such as palm or even pistachio, common in China. Again the oils of these plants are the product used.

· Biodiesel from animal fats or waste oils. Like the ones we usually use at home or used by the food industry.


How is Biodiesel Made



John David Kaweske indicates that there are two traditional methods of making biodiesel from vegetable oils, direct mixing and micro emulsion. Alcohol and a catalyst are used in that mixture to create the biofuel.

Other more modern methods use the so-called transesterification, a chemical reaction between the triglycerides of the oil and alcohol, which transforms the former and provides a reliable biodiesel with less inconvenience to be used in engines.


What is biodiesel used for?



John David Kaweske claims that its main use is as a substitute fuel for diesel in engines of this type.

Another of the most common uses is the mixture of biodiesel with traditional diesel, in proportions that are usually 5%, 10%, 20% or even more.

John David Kaweske claims that biodiesel and other biofuels are experiencing a boom worldwide. Led by China and India, production and consumption data is increasing.

According to John David Kaweske, energy independence from oil-producing countries and environmental goals are the two reasons for its popularity. Especially in developing countries, where the electric alternative for transportation is not so affordable, they represent an important renewable resource.
